Activity

Neurotoxin
FUNCTION: Modulates Cav2.1/CACNA1A voltage-gated calcium channels (P/Q-type currents) in rat cerebellar Purkinje cells and hippocampal CA1-CA3 neurons. At saturating concentrations (>10 nM) decelerates activation kinetics and slightly increases peak amplitude without affecting deactivation kinetics (By similarity). In vivo, does not cause death when intravenously injected into mice (PubMed:36588719). In rat models, through its activity on Cav2.1/CACNA1A, has an ameliorative effect on memory defects provoked by hyperstimulation of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) in the hippocampus (PubMed:36588719). {ECO:0000250|UniProtKB:P85079, ECO:0000269|PubMed:36588719}.
