Activity

Neurotoxin
FUNCTION: Potent venom presynaptic neurotoxin that promotes a long-lasting increase in spontaneous neurotransmitter release at the peripheral and central synapses by selective activation of Cav2.2/CACNA1B (N-type) channels (PubMed:12485994). In addition, it drastically enhances synaptic-vesicle recycling, an effect that is prevented by the Cav2.2-specific inhibitor conotoxin-MVIIA (PubMed:20215402). It activates Cav2.2/CACNA1B by shifting the current-voltage relationship of channels towards more hyperpolarized potentiels in a reversible manner (PubMed:12485994). May have two separate sites of action on Cav2.2: one high affinity linked to changes in gating properties, and a second low affinity that results in block of current activity (PubMed:12485994). {ECO:0000269|PubMed:12485994, ECO:0000269|PubMed:20215402}.
