Neurotoxin
FUNCTION: Modulates Cav2.1/CACNA1A voltage-gated calcium channels (P/Q-type currents) in rat cerebellar Purkinje cells and hippocampal CA1-CA3 neurons (By similarity). At saturating concentrations (>10 nM) decelerates activation kinetics and slightly increases peak amplitude without affecting deactivation kinetics (By similarity). In vivo, does not cause death when intravenously injected into mice (By similarity). In rat models, through its activity on Cav2.1/CACNA1A, has an ameliorative effect on memory defects provoked by hyperstimulation of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) in the hippocampus (By similarity). {ECO:0000250|UniProtKB:P0DRA9, ECO:0000250|UniProtKB:P85079}.
